For many whose lives change overnight through the effects of stroke, the world suddenly becomes a very different place and all the activities you used to do, or the holidays you and your family used to take, are no longer possible. Life can feel very isolating and lonely.

Even perhaps having to know how to obtain a blue badge, or a radar key for public toilets, (and even which toilets to avoid….!)

Our Useful Information is a resource accrued through the experiences of those who attend the Groups, whether directly affected by stroke and also family and supporters….

Short breaks and Holidays

Marsham Court Hotel in Bournemouth. Family run, very friendly. A few fully accessible rooms with wet room. Also have interconnecting rooms. Close to Pier and beach. Gets very booked up.

Premier Inn’s have fully accessible rooms. Best to ring central number for cost. Carer/interconnecting room often free. Ring 03330919817.

The Kennet & Avon Canal Trust at Great Bedwyn and Accessible Boating at Odiham have fully accessible canal boats for day or week hire.


Local Activities

Inclusive Cycling based at Alice Holt Forest have over 40 bikes for every level of mobility and for wheelchair users.

Walk Alton offer walking with walk leader for all levels from gentle 1 mile to longer walks of 5 miles. Weekly. Year round, great way to meet others.

Download the form for Blue Badge here. Check each new place you drive. Some councils e.g Winchester City Council allow you to park anywhere including on rouble yellow lines, whereas other councils still expect payment with no concessions.

Most theatres allow carer to go free or with discount. But you need to ask and some theatres and cinemas have an accessibility scheme that has to be joined first.
